Although Greece is inviting for its perfect weather and scenery, free camping in an area not specified for camping is prohibited, and punished by heavy fines.
Current law prohibits the installation of tents and the parking of camper vans in archaeological sites, the seashore, beaches and generally public spaces. The police have the right to arrest free campers without a warrant, and penalties may reach up to a year's suspended sentence. However, if the camper is arrested setting a fire or polluting, the penalty may be up to five years. In any case, everyone who chooses free camping for their vacations should respect the environment.
